This seminar focuses on the fabulous British author Kate Atkinson (* 1951). Playful, but never shallow; funny, and sometimes deeply bitter-sweet – Atkinson’s magnificent storytelling is influenced by postmodernism occasionally offering glimpses of magic realism. Her favourite topics range from intricate family stories to complex murder cases, one not necessarily excluding the other.
You have to be prepared to read a lot!
We will have a close look at some of Atkinson’s short stories and discuss a few text excerpts of her novels such as Behind the Scenes at the Museum (1995), Emotionally Weird (2000) and her most recent publication, Shrines of Gaiety (2023). You will find the aforementioned collection of texts and excerpts in the corresponding Moodle course, once you have registered for this seminar.
Please get your own copy (print or eBook) of the following two novels and read them before the start of the semester:
Human Croquet (1997)
Case Histories (2004) |
