Reasoning, or the capacity to reason, is what makes us rational agents. As rational agency, we are not just caused to act or believe, but rather reason towards our actions and beliefs. This seminar tackles some foundational questions about the nature of reasoning: is reasoning simply a matter of following formal rules, or a matter of being responsive to reasons appropriately? Do we need to actively take the premises to support the conclusion when we reason? We will also investigate into the question of whether and how we exercise agency when we form or revise our attitude towards reasoning. In navigating through these questions, we will read some prominent papers written on this topic by, among others, Paul Boghossian, John Broome, Jonathan Dancy, Markos Valaris, and Jonathan Way.
This seminar will be taught in English, and will consist mainly in discussion on assigned readings. Active engagement with the texts and participation in class are essential. |
