Description: Technical processes for gas cleaning often are based upon a combination of different separation processes for gaseous and particulate pollutants. The used units range from cyclones, fabric filters, electrostatic precipitators, over wet scrubbers to catalysts and activated-carbon filter. Within the lecture the particular separation mechanisms, the fundamentals of unit dimensioning as well as basic knowledge of emission measurement are taught. Accompanying to the lecture, exercises for design and layout of gas and aerosol filtration units and the evaluation of their separation efficiency are given. These practical examples are explained concerning fabric filters, cyclones and multi-stage scrubbers. There is the chance to carry out experiments on a pilot plant wet scrubber within a practical course. This lecture ends with an excursion to a waste incineration plant. Educational Objective: The students are able to design unit operations for avoiding and diminishing emissions based on practical examples concerning gas and aerosol filtration. They know the fundamental process parameters and can make the calculations for design and layout as well as separation efficiency of different unit operations as there are fabric filters, cyclones, adsorbers and wet scrubbers. |
