The seminar provides multifaceted insights into the recent social and political developments in Chinese society, as well as their impact on the Chinese diaspora abroad.
The seminar consists of two parts:
First, the 90-minute seminar (Baumann) takes place during the whole semester and focuses on four major themes: First, the course will touch upon recent issues of youth, gender, and feminism, as well as digital developments in China. Second, the course sheds light on the recent developments and impact of the Covid-19 pandemic within and beyond China. Third, the class focuses on the broader socio-economic dynamics of a "global China", including issues of migration, labor relations, and labor migration. Fourth, recent social movements and protests, especially in regard to labor and the environment, are discussed. The participants will be expected to take an active part in the discussions of assigned academic texts in class.
The second part of the course (Arnostova) will take place in the second half of the term. It will focus on practical exercises linked to the formulation of a research question, qualitative research methods, group work, discussions and preparation of a presentation on a topic discussed in the first part of the seminar using social media and streaming platforms to asses the current narratives on this topic both in China and abroad. |
