The module consists of two parts: "East Asia in Sociology" and "East Asia in Political Science" which are both obligatory - they cannot be split.

Course outline East Asia in Sociology:

This part of the module DA1 explores sociological perspectives on the societies of China (with Taiwan), South Korea, and Japan.

Module outline DA 1 East Asia in the Social Sciences:

The two courses will introduce students to examples of how East Asia (or an individual country of the region) is dealt with and used as an object of academic investigation in sociology and political science. The goal is to strengthen students' understanding on the one hand of how to apply methods and concepts from the disciplines in the East Asian context and on the other of pertinent socio-political conditions in the region. Both courses will begin with a general introduction into the societies and political systems of the region and then discuss peer reviewed articles from the two disciplines on selected topics.
