This course aims to investigate the framework of variationist sociolinguistics, also called language variation and change or Labovian sociolinguistics. We will discuss the evolvement of variationist sociolinguistic scholarship, starting with Labov’s work in the 1970s and expanding to newer and sometimes competing approaches. During the course, we will explore variability and change at different linguistic domains (discourse, (morpho-)syntax as well as phonology). We will also investigate the interplay of language variation and change, the acquisition of variability as well as the social embedding of change. |
