On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands and Germany in 1944/45, this international research academy for Master students will use field and archival work to examine the role of the First Canadian Army in the liberation. In collaboration with the the Canadian War Cemetery in Groesbeek (the Netherlands; https://www.cwgc.org/visitus/find-cemeteries-memorials/cemetery-details/2063900/groesbeek-canadian-war-cemetery/) and the foundation “Faces to Graves,” which has been in contact with families of those soldiers who died during the liberation in the region, students from UDE and Radboud U (Nijmegen, the Netherlands) will collaborate in person and online to (1) research the personal stories of some the 2,338 Canadian soldiers buried in the War Cemetery and (2) present the results of their research projects on individual Canadian liberators via posters at the annual meeting of the Association for Canadian Studies in the German-speaking Countries (www.kanada-studien.org), which will take place in February/March 2025 at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin.
This class will allow students to enhance their Oral Communication, Teamwork, and Intercultural Knowledge competences. |
