The seminar will introduce students to key concepts and social issues relating to the development of today’s Chinese society. The focus lies mainly on grasping the nuances of dominant social processes in Chinese society and uncovering the institutional arrangements and transformations that underpin them. The topics under discussion include societal structure in rural China, gender roles in imperial as well as republican and communist China, religion in 20th and 21st century China, management of ethnic diversity, migration within China, Chinese work environment and labour migration to Taiwan. During the seminar, aside from academic texts discussion, other interactive materials such as videos and other media inputs will be used.
