Students will gain insight into the political and economic dynamics shaping development in Africa including historical legacies, governance structures and institutional factors contributing to Africa´s development dilemma. Key themes that will be explored include regime type, neopatrimonialism, decentralisation, regional economic integration, and China´s growing influence on the continent, with a particular focus on how these factors influence the trajectory of development in Africa. The seminar will also examine the paradox of abundance, that is, why some resource-rich African nations seem to struggle with development and the challenges that come with resource management. Additionally, students will critically interrogate the developmental implications of neoliberal reforms, foreign aid, debt crises and structural adjustment programmes. Finally, the seminar will equip students to identify the role of global and regional actors in Africa´s development agenda as well as the impact of social protection on poverty alleviation and development in Africa. |
