Audiences, artists, authors, editors, events, prizes, publishing houses, print and digital books, poetry slams, social media—the list of players involved in making literature is endless. In this seminar we will navigate the literary marketplace, exploring various constellations of actors and actions that together make up the world of literature. Students will gain insight into the economic, political, and social impact of literature by examining, for example, the hype surrounding literary awards and prizes. While we will focus on the career trajectory of Toni Morrison, we will also discuss the trajectories of Viet Thanh Nguyen, Elena Poniatowska, and Carol Shields.
This class will allow students to improve their competences in Inquiry & Analysis, Quantitative Literacy, and Written Communication. |
