Developing societies in a sustainable way! – Encountering Tanzanian-German perspectives on societal participation as a global phenomenon and part of higher education (service learning)
The Autumn School provides an opportunity to explore the theory and practice of service learning in a transnational setting. Service learning is an educational approach that has become established at various universities worldwide as part of higher education's third mission. It combines research-based learning with the design and development of related living spaces in civil society. Its primary feature is the combination of scientific research and learning with socio-spatial and everyday challenges, problems, and development perspectives. Another distinctive feature of the seminar is that participants will be students from both UDE and St. Augustine University of Tanzania in Mwanza. The Autumn School will begin with an exploration and deepening of the fundamentals of service learning, providing insights into German and Tanzanian practices in this field. Participants will then work in groups to collaborate with civil society organisations to design and reflect on a service learning project. Each project will address a current social challenge, intertwining reflections from the Global North and Global South. Finally, the results will be presented and discussed. The seminar is designed as a transdisciplinary approach in the field of social sciences. Taking the possibility to transform society as its starting point, it draws on a comprehensive understanding of social engagement. The collaboration between docents and students from the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and St. Augustine University in Mwanza, Tanzania, creates a transnational space for the exchange of ideas and collaborative learning on service learning. The seminar will be offered in English, thus allowing participants to gain experience in an international scientific context and within the framework of project work. The seminar is part of the DAAD-funded SERVE SDGs project and, as such, is eligible for the UDE sustainability
certificate.

Gesellschaften nachhaltig entwickeln! – Eine tansanisch-deutsche Perspektivverschränkung auf gesellschaftliches Engagement als globales Phänomen und Teil von Hochschulbildung (Service Learning)
Die als Blockseminar organisierte Autumn School bietet die Gelegenheit, Service learning im transnationalen Setting kennenzulernen und zu erproben. Es handelt sich um eine didaktische Gestaltungsform in der Hochschullehre, die sich an verschiedenen Hochschulstandorten weltweit als Teil der hochschulischen Third Mission etabliert hat und die forschendes Lernen mit der Gestaltung und Entwicklung von angrenzenden zivilgesellschaftlichen Lebensräumen verbindet. Die Verbindung von wissenschaftlicher Forschung und Lernen mit sozialräumlichen und lebensweltlichen Herausforderungen, Problemen und Entwicklungsperspektiven ist das vorrangige Merkmal. Die Besonderheit des Seminars liegt auch darin, dass die Gruppe der Teilnehmenden sowohl aus Studierenden der UDE wie auch von der St. Augustine University of Tanzania in Mwanza bestehen wird. In der Autumn School werden zunächst die Grundlagen des Service learning thematisiert und vertieft sowie einige Einblicke in die deutsche und tansanische Praxis des Service learnings gewonnen. Danach wird in Gruppenarbeit ein Service learning-Projekt gemeinsam mit zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen gestaltet und reflektiert. Jedes Projekt behandelt dabei eine aktuelle gesellschaftliche Herausforderung und verschränkt Reflexionen des sog. globalen Nordens mit denen des sog. globalen Südens. Abschließend erfolgt die Ergebnispräsentation (Lessons learned) sowie eine Reflexion der Ergebnisse. Das Seminar ist sozialwissenschaftlich transdisziplinär angelegt und für alle Disziplinen geeignet. Es nimmt die Gestaltbarkeit
und Veränderbarkeit von Gesellschaft zum Ausgangspunkt und rekurriert dabei auf ein umfassendes Verständnis von gesellschaftlichem Engagement. Die Perspektivverschränkung zwischen Lehrenden und Studierenden von der UDE einerseits und der St. Augustine University in Mwanza/Tanzania andererseits eröffnet einen transnational Raum für Austausch und gemeinsame Lernprozesse zu Service learning. Das Seminar wird in englischer Sprache durchgeführt und ermöglicht es, Erfahrungen in einem internationalen wissenschaftlichen Kontext und im Rahmen von Projektarbeit zu sammeln. Das Seminar ist Teil des DAAD geförderten Projektes SERVE SDGs und als solches anrechenbar für das Nachhaltigkeitszertifikat der UDE.
