California has been a stage for canonical work of literature with its diverse landscapes and cultural key concepts like the American Dream essential tied to America’s “Golden State”. And the state’s urban rivals, Los Angeles and San Francisco, elbow each other for (literary) attention, whether one prefers hard-boiled detectives or the voices of the Beat Generation. California is a melting pot of literary influences and stories celebrating the state’s lifestyle or critically looking at broken promises of the American Dream. This seminar aims at looking at a variety of texts from the 20th and 21st century to create an impression of the vast variety of literature made either by Californians or written about the Golden State. Students will engage into in-class projects and close reading of texts to trace traditions and developments in what we will call Californian Literature. The material used in this class will be made available via Moodle. Information how to access Moodle will follow in the first session of the seminar. |
