Bemerkung

From a content perspective, the aim of this seminar is to explore some of the key aspects of Africa´s involvement in the global arena on the one hand and interactions among individual states within the continent on the other. As such the seminar is divided into two thematic areas. The first, which is tagged “Africa in Global Affairs” explores Africa´s agency in key global issues including issues of representation and reform in the UN system, responses to geopolitical conflicts, climate negotiations and debt crisis. The second theme explores African regionalism and African foreign policies through the lens of “African solutions to African problems”. Hence it examines how individual African state actors and regional organisations have been driving key developments in areas of peace and security, political stability, and democracy promotion within the African continent. Students will also select an African country as an empirical reference for deepening the general insights discussed in class.

Leistungsnachweis

Students of the MA IBEP will select two academic articles for a 10-minute presentation in class sessions, and submit an essay, based on a specific academic argument discussed in class, of not more than 8 pages in English until 31.3.2027.

Students of the MA TuV will also select two academic articles for a 10-minute presentation in class sessions and complete a written term paper (in English or German) which will count as a module examination in the advanced module. Details on the scope and format of the term paper will be announced during the seminar. The term paper must relate either to the topics discussed in the seminar or in the lecture from the summer semester of 2026 (African Politics).
