This course explores the dark, stylish world of American and British film noir. We will begin by examining the genre’s origins in the 1940s and 1950s, along with its visual aesthetics. Through close analysis of classic films, we will study themes such as crime, moral ambiguity, gender roles, and urban anxiety. The course will compare Hollywood productions with British noir traditions, highlighting similarities and national differences. Readings from film theory and cultural history will enhance students’ understanding of the genre. By the end of the course, students will understand how film noir reflects social tensions and storytelling innovation while shaping modern cinema and contemporary neo-noir traditions. |
