This seminar will give you a chance to get to know poems that tell stories. The narrative poem is an interesting literary form. It is in some respects similar to a short story, but usually much shorter, so a really good one really needs to be a miracle of minimalism. Such texts can utterly captivating, containing love stories (which may turn into stories about poisoning one’s lover), stories about life in the big city, stories about people that are up to no good, ghost stories, nonsense poems about hunting nonsensical animals etc. etc. etc. What are the essentials of storytelling? How do they come together with essentials of poetry, such as rhymes and rhythms and other sound effects? What happens when this is taken one step further and the poem is set to music? These are some of the questions that will be on our minds in the course of the semester. (And yes, we are going to listen to some narrative songs, especially old ballads). The poems we are going to work on will be made available via Moodle.
