The birth of the Gothic is commonly associated with Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto, A Gothic Story (1764), and, later, Ann Radcliffe’s The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794). While works such as these are mainstays of the genre, this course intends to show you a Gothic world, to give you a more complete sense of the literary, dramatic, aesthetic, affective and architectural origin story of those dark and gloomy tales, and to bring you into contact with what the Gothic might have meant for its literary pioneers. This course will include reference to several novels, some of which will be handled as extracts. You will also engage with Gothic images (artistic and architectural - in lieu of being able to see them in person), and dramas that stretch the possibilities of performing the genre. Authors include Joanna Baillie, Ann Radcliffe, Horace Walpole, and Thomas Chatterton among others. A selection of Gothic materials and a full reading list will be made available in October 2027, on the online learning platform. |
