Ecomedia is a subfield of environmental humanities that pays attention to the cultural creation and critique of media texts such as films, videos, and other content forms. The geopolitical and socioeconomic term 'global south' is used in this course to refer to societies of the southern hemisphere such as those in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, including (arguably) nations such as Australia, and New Zealand. With specific media texts drawn from Africa, Latin America, and New Zealand, the course examines the media representations of the impact of capitalism, extractivism, and the Anthropocene on indigenous societies. Major theoretical and analytical concepts of ecomedia will receive attention. At the end of the course, students are expected to have basic knowledge of the ideas that constitute ecomedia and gain skills in the analysis of media texts from the global south. Materials for this course consist of media and theoretical texts. Media Texts 1. Black November by Jeta Amata, 2012 (a feature film) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2147225/) 2.
