In this seminar, we will study the contested field of the “female gothic”. Were women using this emerging genre to revolt against patriarchal structures? Or is there no such thing as a very specific female form of gothic writing? To understand how women wrote gothic fiction, we will look at different texts by women writers, with a special focus on the 19th century, but starting with Anne Radcliffe’s novel The Mysteries of Udolpho. Literature will be made available.
