Kommentar

Novellas are often overlooked but many of them are canonical (The Great Gatsby, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Time Machine). They often make for easy reading, as they are the perfect length for a long train journey or a relaxing Saturday afternoon. This class will take you on an adventure through a literary tradition that rivals that of the novel but hitherto underexplored. It will skill you in reading across periods and thinking about forms. It will also build your confidence in challenging theoretical traditions, and perhaps, coming up with theories of your own. The class will cover examples of the novella from the eighteenth century to the present, including works by imperial and postcolonial authors, men and women writers, and encompassing a range of literary modes. The reading list will be somewhat demanding, and you are strongly encouraged to use paper copies of works where available. Authors include Penelope Aubin, Mary Wollstonecraft, V.S. Naipaul, Joseph Conrad, and Angela Carter. A full reading list will be made available on the online learning platform in October 2027.

Bemerkung

As the course starts in November, we will have one additional meeting (Blocktag) on a day we'll select together in class.
