This seminar revisits the ever more important question of populism in light of recent political developments in the US and UK. It is conceived as a necessary addition to an earlier seminar of the same title, taught before Donald Trump’s re-election and before the rise of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK as a major force in British politics. Rather than treating Trump and Brexit as exceptional, we will ask how their political languages, media strategies, and cultural narratives have persisted and become shockingly normalised.
We will examine campaign speeches, journalism, social media posts, podcasts, and memes to discuss phenomena like nationalism and nostalgia, anti-elitism, conspiracy cultures, and the seemingly ubiquitous “culture wars”. |
