The course covers the main theoretical approaches to communication between human users and artificial intelligence systems, such as chatbots, voice assistants, recommendation systems, and text generation systems. The rapid proliferation of AI in everyday life in recent years has encouraged attempts to conceptualise communication with AI as a new social phenomenon. The course considers two major groups of theories: (1) theories that attribute agency to AI, and (2) critical theories of AI. Drawing on key texts and empirical data from real-life communication with AI, the course will review the postulates of theories of human-AI communication, examining how they connect communication, knowledge, and action. |
