As competent users of language, we are able to recognise and produce a tremendous range of texts – conversations, lectures, WhatsApp messages, scientific articles, etc. This course provides a systematic approach to the description of registers and genres, which are characterised by different situational contexts, communicative purposes and, of course, specific linguistic features. It will outline definitions of register and genre, introduce basic corpus-linguistic methods and tools and take a close-up perspective on selected registers and genres. Students will be invited to participate in the selection of the registers/genres to be investigated. |
