California has a rich history of game-changing innovation, consistent reinvention, and successful self-promotion. Given all this, it perhaps comes as no surprise that the state is also home to some of the most innovative creators in the arts. The aim of this seminar is to trace some of this California magic through the eyes of those reshaping and reforming the state, specifically Southern California (SoCal). We will encounter the work of artistic creators who have transformed the way California sees itself and how it is seen by others. Students will engage with intermedial materials, including literature, music, and art to understand concepts of meaning-making, myth creation, and reimagination. Our course will include works by eye-opening writers and Ohrwurm-worthy musicians. Students will also study SoCal’s palimpsest landscapes through an exploration of the region’s murals and freeway artworks. As part of the coursework, students will take part in a student conference, where they have the chance to present some of their findings on California.
