Winston Churchill is best remembered as the British Prime Minister who won the Second World War. But before he became the powerful and sturdy politician that most people know, he was a young journalist and writer, who tried to make a name in an ever-growing British Empire. Being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953, his writings have made a mark in the world of literature. This seminar will focus on his early works as a young man in Victorian Britain. We will be looking at his journalistic writing, mainly “The Story of the Malakand Field Force” (1898), and at his novel “Savrola: a Tale of the Revolution in Laurania” (1900). Literature will be made available in the first session. |
