Module description: This module consists of two equal parts for 6 ECTS - a seminar and a project study. The seminar focuses on providing students with background knowledge and conceptual approaches with which to engage key topics and developments in Chinese society, while the project study emphasizes critically applying what is learnt in the seminar to contemporary issues in structured group discussions and case studies. Participation is required for both.
Literature: Readings are assigned for each session. Students are encouraged to consult the syllabus (to be distributed to registered participants between April 9 and April 20) for details on how to access readings.
Remarks: The seminar examines some of the major themes and scholarly works relating to Chinese society over the last century. Topics include rural social structures, the changing role of women in Chinese society in the early 20th century, transformations in social and economic organization, China’s ethnic categorization project, as well as Post-reform developments, such as urbanization, migration, and civil society movements. The seminar’s focus is on grasping the nuances of dominant social processes in Chinese society and uncovering the institutional arrangements and transformations that underpin them. The aim of this course is therefore to provide students with the background knowledge and conceptual frameworks necessary to develop their M.A. (or B.A.) thesis on sociological topics relating to China.
