Course description:
The course will cover historical and contemporary aspects of migrations inside China and from China to other parts of the world. Thematically there will be four main components: (a) Migration, ethnic boundaries and ethnogenesis; (b) labor migrations, from the coolie trade (1850s) till today; (c) Chinatown, community and enclave; (d) sending and receiving areas/states and diaspora politics.
Assessment: Project and written assignment
Open to MA and PhD students in East Asian Studies and students in related degree programs
