Programmes that include the teaching of additional subjects in the foreign language, are said to meet many of the principles of up-to-date English language teaching, e.g. the target language is used for meaningful purposes, and the intensity of language use fosters natural language acquisition processes. In this course, we will start out with an overview of what types of bilingual programmes there are internationally and within Germany, which subjects are frequently taught bilingually, and the general principles that are advocated for teaching bilingually. We will then take a closer look at a selection of relevant issues, such as the role of code switching in bilingual teaching, concepts of the bilingual mental lexicon, the intercultural element and materials design for bilingual teaching. The course will also include a hands-on phase, in which you put gained knowledge into use by creating digital materials for bilingual education. |
